Reformer Pilates
What is Reformer Pilates?
Joseph Pilates, the founder of the Pilates exercise, also invented the Pilates Reformer Machine. A reformer is essentially a resistance tool which promotes the development of good alignment, core strength, and flexibility.
Reformer Pilates exercises offer a range of variations and can be done lying down, standing, or sitting. Reformer Pilates class is designed to engage every muscle of your body using an intricate balance of weight resistance springs, a moving carriage, and several other accessories.
It is a versatile workout suitable for all ages and fitness levels, done with a highly experienced teacher and tailored to suit you and your exercise goals.
Who is it for?
Reformer Pilates can help improve and maintain overall physical fitness – leading to greater strength, flexibility and balance, which in turn improve posture, movement and mental health. Reformer Pilates should form a key component to any person wanting to improve their overall fitness.
Performed on the machine, it provides a low impact (high intensity) workout and can be particularly helpful for people who’ve recently had an injury as part of a rehabilitation programme or want to get more precise with their movements, or to isolate and strengthen certain muscles even further.
Engaging with the Pilates reformer presents significant benefits for women who are pregnant or have recently given birth. The reformer offers both support and feedback during exercises, allowing practitioners to perform movements with accuracy and control suited to their specific stage. This form of practice is essential for facilitating a comfortable and safe pregnancy, as well as for aiding in the body’s recovery and the restoration of optimal function following childbirth.
Due to the individual attention and tailor made format of the class, this method can suit everybody from elite athletes to people with limited mobility and people with low fitness levels.
The Benefits
- improved flexibility
- increased muscle strength and tone, particularly of your abdominal muscles, lower back, hips and buttocks (the ‘core muscles’ of your body)
- balanced muscular strength on both sides of your body.
- enhanced muscular control of your back and limbs
